Napoleon Hill stated, “Self-disciplined begins with the mastery of your thoughts. If you don’t control what you think, you can’t control what you do. Simply, self-discipline enables you to think first and act afterward.” Self-discipline is the ability of doing what you know you should do, when you should do it, regardless of your emotional disposition.  Great achievers are always willing to do what a non-achievers and unsuccessful are unwilling to do.

Do what is goal achieving and be proactive rather than reactive.  Extraordinary achievers do not necessarily like to do all of the things that contribute to and enhance their success, such as goal setting, developing a positive mental attitude, reading and taking action.  But a successful person is willing to do what an unsuccessful person is unwilling to do.

J. Paul Getty observed, “The individual who wants to reach the top in business must appreciate the might and force of habit. He must be quick to break those habits that can break him-and hasten to adopt those practices that will become the habits that help him achieve the success he desires.” A lack of self-discipline is one of the main reasons for the failures we experience in both our personal and professional lives. Failure’s most successful strategy is procrastination and procrastination thrives in the absence of self-discipline.

To develop self discipline start with the little things. The big pictures are actually the little things that sums up the BIG PICTURE.

Create a Vision: Brian Tracy said, “Decide upon your major definite purpose in life and then organize all your activities around it.” Self-discipline needs a compelling vision to stay focus on the action plan that will lead to its accomplishment.

Decision: Decide on what you want to do and take action and repeat the process over and over again. Decide to embark on self-discipline and stay with it.

Exercise: Jim Rohn observed, “We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret or disappointment.” Self-discipline is like your muscles, just as it takes muscle to build muscle, it takes self-discipline to build self-discipline. The more you train it the more it develops and the less you train it the less it develops. The pain of self-discipline outweighs the values of instant gratification that last but for a moment.

Cultivate the habit of listening to audio-books or reading books instead of watching TV.  Jim Rohn says that it may be hard to stay inside and read while your friends play at the beach; but one day you will own the beach!
