The Power of Leverage

“The minute you involve others in your vision, the minute your desire impact others, all your personal power factors will benefit from the multiplier effect. This is real leverage. it is obvious that, when you alone hold a visioin, you speak with one small voice. When you recruit others to the cause, you speak with a high fidelity, mega-watt sound system.”
Darby V. Checketts

Leverage is Power. The day and time when it was just the few that could harness the power of leverage has come to an end. Leverage is the ability to do more with less effort to achieve more. The ability to leverage the resources at your disposal has become critical to your personal and professional success. This is one skill that you have to acquire and consistently maintain, in order to achieve your expectations. Your success is no longer predicated solely on your personal knowledge and expertise but your ability to leverage other people’s knowledge, wisdom, money, relationships and time.

Benjamin Franklin once said: “There are two ways to acquire wisdom; you can either buy it or borrow it. By buying it, you pay full price in terms of time and cost to learn the lessons you need to learn. By borrowing it, you go to those men and women who have already paid the price to learn the lessons and get their wisdom from them.” With our world becoming a global village the extent to which you can now leverage the resources that abound in the earth is almost unlimited. You can now build an international business from your living room leveraging the power of the Internet, time and resources of people in other far countries.

We see the power of leverage in almost every aspect of our personal and professional lives. It is imperative that you understand that there are some things you may not have the capabilities, knowledge or the time to accomplish them. In order to succeed, you need to leverage the capabilities, knowledge and time of other people to achieve success. A very practical example can be seen as President-elect Barack Obama introduces his Economic Leadership Team, that’s some heavy-duty power of leverage as he taps these astute economic minds of our time.

Success today, largely depends on the results that you obtain from the leverage of other people doing things that are not your best areas of productivity and your highest return activities, which, is vital to your success. This is simply your ability to leverage the time, knowledge and information provided by other individuals. This concept enables you to do less and output more and this is not just in terms of money but time, relationships, opportunities and freedom to do what you are passionate about.

The question you ought to be asking in order to really maximize the power of leverage is this; is there one thing that you are doing that is bringing you inadequate outcome that could be enhanced with the help of someone else?  For instance, you are attempting to self publish a book and promote it yourself, what could be the impact on the final outcome if you enlisted the help of others to promote the book for you? By enlisting the help of others, you can enlarge your reach and take the burden of doing it all by yourself off your shoulders.

The power of leverage can also be seen in many examples of our daily lives.  For instance, we hire people to build our websites, to write our sales letters, to cut our grass, clean our homes, etc.  We run a company and hire virtual assistants to take work off ourselves. As this year comes to an end, examine every aspect of your life where you can use the power of leverage.

Your Mind: Key to your Success

The purpose of learning is growth, and our minds, unlike our bodies, can continue growing as we continue to live. MORTIMER ADLER

The mind is not just man’s seat of feelings or thoughts. As a success seeker your mind is the key to the achievement of a worthy goal and the experience of growth in any area of your life. Consequently, there is a need for mental enlargement and the acquisition of knowledge through study, research, seminars and mastermind groups.

Winston Churchill remarked, “…only the empires of the mind endure.” One of your most valuable assets today is your ability to use your mind to access, communicate, and creatively evaluate information. In our world in which the main item for consumption is becoming information, it’s what you know and how quickly you can learn that matters and not your status quo.

Success is the product of the appropriate use of the mind. Your mind is one single factor that determines the value of your life and socio-economic relevance to your generation. Your mind is the residence of your thoughts and your thoughts hold the key to an excellent and extraordinary life. It is imperative to understand that the ability to progress in any activity embarked upon is highly impacted if your mind is incapacitated in any shape or form.

The condition of your mind determines the condition of your life, thus your mind is a critical key to your success in any area of your life. One of the main reasons why success is an illusion to most people in their personal and professional life is because of the state or condition of their minds. Often the mind is cluttered to the point that it hinders any meaningful progress of any worthwhile endeavour embarked upon.

Bishop David Oyedepo in his book “Towards Mental Exploits” outline four major functions of the mind that will produce outstanding success. viz:

  • Learning – Knowledge is what you acquire in the process of learning.
  • Understanding – Your depth of understanding determines how outstanding you become in life.
  • Reasoning – Reasoning enhances the quality of decision you make.
  • Imagination – Your imagination sets the pace for your destination

To start with, you must emancipate your mind from the things that are causing it to be unproductive and your inability to take congruent action toward your anticipated expectation for which the following elements are invaluable:

  • Feed your mind with positive and uplifting materials.
  • Surround yourself with positive people
  • Stay away from the naysayer
  • Belong to a mastermind group
  • Change your focus from problems to solutions
  • Attend seminars and conferences
  • Enlist the help of a coach or mentor
  • Prayer – this is my favourite it works all the time.

E.W. Kenyon stated, “Make your brain work; it will sweat, but make it work. Then it will improve, it will develop, until you become the envy of those around you.” Go to work today the results will be immeasurable.

The ABC of Success

“Success is the result of action directed toward a desire goal connected to any of the tripartite aspects of the human nature.” Richard Onebamoi

A for Action:

Napoleon Hill said, “Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire and begin at once, whether you are ready or not, to put this plan into action.” The action you are taking right now determines the measure of success that you will ultimately bring into your life. Whatever it is you want to achieve taking action is a foundational key to your success and it is one single factor that separates the high achievers from everyone else creating unparalleled success. You may have the best intentions, business plans, or goal strategies unless all these are translated into action nothing meaningful will be achieved.

B for Belief:

Your beliefs can empower or restrain you from the success that you envision in different aspects of your life. As a matter of fact even if you have goals and action oriented, self-limiting beliefs can sabotage your success. You have to believe in the possibilities that abound in the earth and the resources at your disposal. In order to be successful at anything for that matter you have to have faith in God and your ability to bring to manifestation your intent. The power of belief is a function of the mind if you believe it’s possible it’s possible while on the other side of the coin if you believe it’s impossible it’s impossible. Napoleon Hill observed, “Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve. The Bible states, “All things are possible to him that believes.”

C for Consistency:

Consistency is a virtue to cultivate in order to be productive and proactive in spite of the challenges on your success journey. It is the ability to stay on the task day after day repeating the same procedure until the objective is attained. This suffices to say that you have to always follow through on your actions to achieve success. For instance, a man pulled down a brick wall with consistent hammering. It is important to understand that it is not the first blow that brought the brick crumbling down but the consistent and cumulative impact of the blow. If you are going to achieve any meaningful success you must be consistent at what you are doing to make it happen.

The ‘ABC of Success’ could set you on the path to achieving massive results in your life, so take action today and incorporate the ‘abc of success’ into you daily routine and I will see you at the top.

Developing a Mindset for Success

One of the single impediments to developing a mindset for success is lack of the understanding of what success means to you. Therefore in developing a mindset for success it is imperative to understand and define what success means to you. Once this is clear then you can begin with the process of developing a mindset for success. There are countless definitions of success on the internet and in books but you cannot develop a mindset for success on the bases of someone’s definition and understanding of success, however their definition and understanding could serve as a guidepost.

Tip # 1. Change your Thinking:

The Holy Bible states, “As he thinks in his heart, so is he. This simply means you are what you think. Is your thinking success-oriented or failure-oriented? Success in any enterprise begins in the form of thought and only the person in whose mind the thought is set in motion limits the degree to which he will experience it. It has been proven that you attract what you think about the most. That is, your dominating thoughts will eventually reproduce themselves in outward, physical manifestation. Changing the thoughts that are not congruent with success thinking and disallowing them to take residence in your mind is invaluable.

Tip # 2. Know what you want:

To develop a Mindset for success you must know exactly want you want. As it occurred to you that most people don’t really know what they want? Taking this for granted will be an oversight. Determine what is it that you really want out of life and then take action that are in harmony with your desired intent.

Tip # 3. Read Books:

It is a stated fact that most people never read after they graduate from high school. Charlie “Tremendous” Jones observed, “You are the same today that you are going to be in five years from now except for two things: the people with whom you associate and the books you read.”

Tip # 4. Focus:

Focus and define the perfect outcome. Without focus it becomes a difficult task to have a mindset for success because of the so many things that is soliciting for your undivided attention. Staying focus on the perfect outcome helps to develop and maintains a mindset for success.

Tip # 5. Proper perspective:

Perspective makes all the difference to anyone that aspire for success in any enterprise. In the midst of challenging times taking a long look at the situations of life is the best antidote to depression, frustration and anything that could sabotage your efforts for success. Always putting things in proper perspective will help developing a mindset for success.

Tip # 6. Association:

You might have heard the saying: “Birds of the same feather flock together.” Well, this saying holds true, not only for birds, but also for successful and unsuccessful people. Your associations will ultimately play out on who you become. Choose your associations wisely because it can affect and determine your mindset for success.

Here are my top 6 tips on developing a mindset for success. Of course this is not an exhaustive list. Please, jump in with your top tips on developing a mindset for success. Thanks for sharing.

How to Overcome Success Limitations

Everyone that I know desires to be successful in one or every aspects of their lives at one time or the other. For some it has been a thrilling and enjoyable experience while others it has been gruesome and an elusive dream. Why is this so? No matter how hard you have tried to succeed, you are always falling short of your expectations personally or professionally. One of the significant reasons why success seems to be a figment of imagination is the undeniable fact that there are limitations sabotaging your efforts. Therefore overcoming these limitations will ensure your success in any enterprise. The list below is not exhaustive but these will set you up on your quest to overcoming any success limitation.

1.    Recognize Limitations: To overcome success limitations first and foremost you have to recognize that there are limitations. This is imperative, as most people tend to live in denial of the facts. It will be impossible to overcome what you are ignorant of.

2.    Change Perspective: As you recognize the limitations you have to change your perspective from can’t to can, impossible to possible, unable to able. This will help empower you as you take on that limitation.

3.    Do not exaggerate: Have a proper definition of what the limitation is. Avoid the propensity to exaggerate that is taking the limitation out of context or underestimating the limitation.

4.    Books and Audio books: The importance of this point cannot be overemphasized. Get books and audio books in the areas of your life that you desire to succeed so as to learn and glean practical information that will facilitate your progress.

5.    Mastermind Group: To have a group of like minded individuals that you can learn from and stay accountable to is invaluable. They can brainstorm with you on areas of difficulty and suggest solutions. Plus you will be able to leverage from individual or group experience and knowledge.

6.    A Mentor: Enlist with the help of a mentor that will guide and help navigate through those limitations.

7.    Change Your Focus: You ultimately become what you focus on and what you focus on becomes your governing realities most of the time. Hence, rather than focusing on your limitations focus on your strength and possibilities.

8.    Confront the limitation: Our limitations tend to paralyze us, holding us back from taking constructive action in the direction of our definite purpose. There are those who for some reasons completely avoid the situation entirely. Now the problem with this line of action of course is the fact that you miss out on valuable lessons you would have learnt or gained and the person you would have become in the process of addressing the issue. From my experience of working with people these becomes a vicious circle. It ought not to be so.

Success Power Points: Strategic Thinking By: Brian Tracy

The Quality of Thoughtfulness

The ability to think and plan strategically is perhaps the most important single skill of the effective executive. In a longitudinal study of leaders who, in retrospect, made the best and most effective decisions, the single quality that stood out from all others was the quality of “thoughtfulness.” Thoughtfulness may be defined as a careful concern for the secondary consequences of each decision and each action. This is the essence of strategic thinking.

Your Most Powerful Tool

Most powerful tool that you as an executive have to bring to bear on your work is your mind – your thinking ability. Everything you do that sharpens and hones your ability to think with greater clarity before acting, will benefit you and help you to move upward and onward more rapidly in your career.

Use a Two Pronged Approach

The best way to approach strategic thinking is two pronged. This means to work simultaneously on the personal and the corporate.

Increase Your “Return On Energy”

In personal terms, strategic planning is an exercise in increasing “return on energy.” Your greatest single asset is your earning ability. And your earning ability is nothing more than the total of the mental, emotional and physical energies that you can apply toward getting valuable results for yourself and your company.

Anything that you can do to increase your return on energy invested will increase your overall levels of effectiveness and contribution in every area of your life, especially, and most importantly in your work.

Action Exercises

Here are two things you can do immediately to increase your return on equity and your return on energy.

First, think about everything that you are doing in terms of its financial return to your organization. What are the things that you do that yield the highest return on equity? Whatever they are, do more of .

Second, think in personal terms about the things you do that give you the highest return on energy. Where do you contribute the greatest value and achieve the greatest satisfaction? Whatever they are, do more of these things.

The rewards of a Positive Mental Attitude

“It is our attitude at the beginning of a difficult task which, more than anything else, will affect its successful outcome.” William James

The power of a positive mental attitude cannot be overemphasize. In our personal and professional lives the one most single factor to guarantee extraordinary achievement and success is having a positive mental attitude. In his book “keys to Success”, Napoleon Hill explicitly outlined the rewards of a positive mental attitude and he stated, “A positive mental attitude is the single most important principle of the science of success.” This list of rewards will serve as motivating factors in building a positive mental attitude. You will enjoy the following:

1. Success consciousness, which attracts only the circumstances which make for success
2. Sound health, both physical and mental
3. Financial independence
4. A labour of love in which to express yourself
5. Peace of mind
6. Applied faith, which makes fear impossible
7. Enduring friendship
8. Longevity and a well-balanced life
9. Immunity from self-limitation
10. The wisdom to understand yourself and others

There they are Mr. Hill’s lists on the rewards of a positive mental attitude. Now, if I may add to one or two to that list it would be that, 1. a positive mental attitude gives you the power and confidence to approach any situation or circumstance and 2. It contributes to your overall performance.

Mr. Hill also talked about the penalties of a negative mental attitude and I will be sharing them with you on my next post. Enjoy
