4 Tips on Goal Setting

“If you go to work on your goals, your goals will go to work on you. If you go to work on your plan, your plan will go to work on you. Whatever good things we build end up building us.” Jim Rohn

Achieving your personal and professional goals either short or long term involves deciding what exactly you want to do with your life. This is an intricate part in formulating your goal setting strategies. Once you have finished your goal setting exercise you will have to break them into smaller and manageable tasks to be completed as you set out to achieve your objectives. Embark upon your goals once they are in place. Do not procrastinate but rather take action immediately.

Having daily and weekly sets of goals are the best ways to have a manageable list. As a result you will always be in the position of consistently moving towards your ultimate purpose. As everyday will provide you with opportunity, it is of great importance that you also learn to create opportunities that will help facilitate the fulfillment of your goal. This will create a feeling of accomplishment on your part thus motivating you to set more goals.

Here are some indicators that should be taken into consideration in setting goals and achieving them.

Attitude: Attitude plays an important role in setting and achieving your goals. You must ask yourself if there is any part of you or your mind that is holding you back toward the completion of your goals. Do you exhibit actions that are incongruent with your goals or that impair your plans all together? It is imperative to take immediate action to address the situation before it completely sabotages your efforts. Solutions may include developing a positive mental attitude by reading and listening to motivating and uplifting materials, enlisting the help of a coach that can hold you accountable for your actions.

Education: Most of the times we are not adequately equipped to accomplish some of our goals. For instance, starting a work from home business will need some kind of skills and information that one may not necessarily possess right now, however these skills can be acquired through formal or self education. Consequently, we must continually acquire information and expertise through out our lives so as to address new objectives, challenges or demands placed upon us. Jim Rohn remarked, “Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune.” Education is a key in achieving your goals. If your goals require that you have a certain kind of prerequisite or specialization or demand the acquisition of certain skills, make it your priority in getting the appropriate formal or self education so as to advance your goals.

Self-Discipline: Self-discipline is often defined as the ability to get yourself to take action regardless of your emotional state. Jim Rohn said, “Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.” It is improbable that you will ever achieve anything worthwhile without self-discipline. It is not enough to have goals but it’s equally important to stay discipline by consistently taking action in spite of the challenges toward bringing those goals to fruition. Brian Tracy articulated in a profound way by saying, “Your ability to develop the habit of self-discipline will contribute more to your success than any other quality of character.”

Financial Situation: Personal financial situation always play a major role in achieving your goals. Have a realistic goal on how much you really want to earn. You also must be able to create plans or strategies by which you will be able to reach your earning potential. It’s of importance that in setting your goals you should also take into consideration your financial capabilities. For instance if your goal is to attend four major ‘Success Empowerment Seminars’ in the next calendar year that will provide you with information and skills that will enhance your intellectual capacity as well as move you in the direction of your anticipated goals thus your financial ramification must be taken into consideration.

To start achieving your lifetime goals, set a quarter of a century plan, then break it down to 5 year plans then break it down again to 1 year plans, then 6 month plans then monthly plans, then weekly, then daily. Then create a to-do list for the day. Always review your plans and prepare for contingencies.

5 Tips for G.R.E.A.T Success

In this post, I will look at five tips for great success. When a piece of instrument comes from the factory all its functionalities are set to the default position. But the ability to function according to design is built within it. It is your responsibility to adjust those functionalities for optimum performance. At this time, when that instrument does not function according to design it is said to have malfunctioned and its operation said to have failed because the purpose for its designed was not fulfilled. Conversely, when it functions according to designed it is said to function well and its operation termed successful. Therefore, great success is the ability to function according to design.

You are built and designed to succeed not to fail. Make a declaration that you are loaded with innate capacity, you are ordained to be a success, to operate by design, not by default and to have great success. You are loaded with potential, that’s the potential to be what you have not yet become, to do what you have not yet done, to go where you have not yet gone for you possess the potential for manifestation.

To have G.R.E.A.T success is to function according to design. Here is what the acronym G.R.E.A.T stands for:

G - Goal oriented: A goal is one of the most important ingredients in achieving a great success. If you must have a great success and contribute to the successes of others, then you cannot afford to live a sporadic and haphazard life. For that reason you must be goal-oriented.

R - Result oriented: To have great success you have to be result oriented. What this implies is that you can’t afford to be a wandering generality. You refuse to live by chance but choice. You expect to obtain results from all your endeavors from personal to professional. Hence, to be successful you must be result oriented.

E - Expectation oriented: The law of expectation states, “Whatever you expect with confidence, becomes your own self-fulfilling prophecy.” With that in mind, please understand that expectation is the act or state of expecting or looking forward to an event that is about to happen. To have great success you’ve got to have positive expectation.

A - Action oriented: Without taking action your goals will amount to nothing. The life you are going to live and the measure of success you will achieve are all being decided by the action you are taking right now. Consequently, in having a great success you’ve got to be action oriented.

T - Time oriented: To have great success you have to be time oriented. Set a time frame for the goal: for next week, in four months and set a time limit for your goal, allocating enough time to achieve the goal, while inadequate timing can frustrate the progress and execution of your goal.

You function by design when you are goal, result, expectation, action and time oriented. Having great success does come with a price and it is G.R.E.A.T (goal, results, expectation, action and time). You must have great success because you were designed for success. Go for you dreams and aspirations. Victoria Acerta!!!

6 Steps to Review Goals for Peak Performance

Reviewing your goals for peak performance. This is one of the keys that set the extraordinary achievers from the average performers. There are two groups that this article targets. The first group - yes, you have set your goals and you are ready to execute your action plan. The second group - you have already initiated your action plan. Now, for both groups it is imperative that your goals be reviewed consistently through the process of goal achievement. For instance, those who have commence action on their goals and have seen tremendous or insignificant results and those who haven’t. In both scenarios there is always room for improvement. Human development experts tell us we can improve on every facet of our lives by at least ten per cent.

These are some of the most important reasons for reviewing your goals: to identify where you are in the process of your goal achievement, to keep you motivated, to ascertain what is operational and what is not, to recognize what to improve on and that which is obsolete and to identify the goal(s) that are no longer congruent with your core values and expectation. Dr. Rodney H Brady observed, “A goal oriented life is far more likely to lead to success than a life that leaves success to chance.” Thus, it’s important to review your goals to ensure that your goals stay relevant to your intent and remove the ones that are no longer appropriate. Here are six steps to review your goals.

1.    Review to make certain that your goal is personal: It is important that they are personal. Your most important goals must be yours and yours only. As they must be in alignment with your core values.

2.    Review and make sure your goals are stated in present tense: for instance, I make $4000 per month and not I will make…

3.    Review weekly or monthly your action plans vis-à-vis your results: Measure if your action plans are producing the desired expectations.

4.    Review to identify and eliminate obstacles so as to focus on important priorities and your goal setting success. Locate where you are wasting time, energy and resources so as to redirect and realign with definite purpose.

5.    Review your attitude in the process of your goal achievement. Negative mental attitude can hinder the accomplishment of your goals. Make sure you are positive not negative

6.    Review your goals and make sure they all qualify as SMART i.e. Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-oriented

Finale

Regular reviews of your goals  are critical to your success. Whatever your goals are the key to achieving them 95% of the times is to review them consistently and frequently. This discipline is invaluable. Start today and the benefits will astound you.

My Top Three Recipes for Success

Over and over again we hear and read that success is a journey, not a destination. That success leaves clues. My favourite one is “Success is not to be pursued; it is to be attracted by the person you become.” Jim Rohn.  Are all these and many more just slogans? Achieving success is more than nice phraseologies but rather a commitment to values, a declaration of intent and action-oriented. These are timeless unbeatable recipes for personal and professional success. Consequently, these three elements form the foundation for outstanding success in any aspect of life. Let us examine them together and your thoughts will be highly appreciated.

Commitment to values: Every high achiever knows that commitment to values is top on the list and is an integral part of any success story. What are they? They are the knowledge of who you are, what you believe in and what you stand for. Brian Tracy in his book “GOALS!” states “The very core of your personality is your values. Your values are what makes you the person you are.” Clarifying your values and commit to them for, this is critical in your pursuit of personal or professional achievements.

Declaration of your intent: Defining, clarifying and declaring your intent is invaluable to your success. Denis Waitley remarked, “Goals provide the energy source that powers our lives. One of the best ways we can get the most from the energy we have is to focus it. That is what goals can do for us; concentrate our energy.” Without realistic intent and objectives, how can you measure your success? You see, all successful people have well-defined intent based on the knowledge of their anticipated outcome. This is crucial if you must have good success.

Action-oriented: The acquisition of strategic information every now and then is of little or no value with congruent action. The other two elements above and other success strategies must embody consistent action in order to produce extraordinary results. Did you know that what you are going to bring into your life and the measure of success you will achieve, are all being decided by the action you are taking right now. You are what you do over and over again, moving gradually and steadily in the direction of your dominant action.

The absence of these elements will shortcut any meaningful experience as you progress. Develop these technologies and you will very well be on your way to a significant life.

Three Essential Keys for Success

Strategic Action:

The ability to take action strategically is perhaps one of the most important single skills of achieving personal and professional success.  Strategic action may be defined as the process to ensure successful achievement of personal or professional goals and objectives and this is the essence of strategic action. Strategic action involves deciding first and foremost what you really want to accomplish in every area of your life, secondly, putting in place short and long term goals, third, break up these goals into daily, weekly and monthly doable activities, fourth, map out strategic plans for goal achievement and finally take immediate massive strategic action to bring into fruition the intended outcome.

Practical Wisdom

The Holy Bible states “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” Proverbs 4:7. Wisdom at work in any aspect (personal or professional) determines the quality of your outcomes, as it is the principal thing. Joseph W. Meeker observed that “Wisdom is a state of the human mind characterized by profound understanding and deep insight.” The need to gain profound understanding and insight in personal or professional endeavour is an essential key for success. Practical wisdom is the proper application of what you understand. Wisdom without understanding is futile while knowledge without application is unproductive. You acquire practical wisdom from learning, gathering of information, gleaning from great minds and reading. Your success in personal and professional life is guaranteed with practical wisdom.

Maintaining Relevance

Every success seeker knows the challenge to maintain relevance in whatever they have set out to accomplish because there are so many things vying for your attention which are not necessarily relevant in any form or shape to your objectives and the ultimate direction of your life. These individuals dissipate their energies, talents and intellectual resources here and there on things and activities that are not relevant to their life mission and desired outcomes. Consequently, the ability to maintaining relevance in the pursuit of your of objectives and definite purpose is invaluable. Maintaining relevance and refusing to be distracted from whatever you have set your mind on to accomplish will provide you an advantage in this competitive environment. One the ways to maintain relevance is to stay focus on the objectives.

Dear self improver and success seeker, please, understand that success is not arriving at the zenith overnight but it is making continuous progress toward your goal achievement and definite purpose. I believe if you incorporate these three essential keys for success into your life you will inevitably become an outstanding success.

Goal achievement: More harm than good?

“Most people struggle with life balance simply because they haven’t paid the price to decide what is really important to them.” Stephen Covey

I came across a thought-provoking article entitled “Are You Too Obsessed with Your Goals?” To begin with, allow me give you this caveat, anything you become obsessed with will not serve your ultimate purpose in the final outcome. The question “Are there times when goal achievement can do more harm than good?” caught my attention in that article that I thought I should share my thoughts for my wonderful readers. Any of your comments on this topic will be greatly appreciated.

To think about it, what use is your goal achievement if it is not congruent with your core values and life’s mission? None I believe in my candid opinion. Goal achievement is meant to do good all the times. It is expected to better your life and not to make your life bitter.

In the example given in that article, a man got divorced three times because his wives kept complaining that he worked all of the time. This implies, that he was working all the time on his goal achievement at the expense of his family. This example is a good example of misplaced priorities when goal achievement is at the expense of things that matter most. Such as family, health and relationship.

The issue is here is not goal achievement but the goals that are not in harmony with one’s core values and life’s mission. It is imperative therefore; to identify what your core values and life’s mission are before setting and pursuing your goals. Your goals should be deliberately set to be in harmony with your core values and to move you in the direction of your life’s mission.

To stress the point once again, it is not goal achievement that does the harm but rather when your goals are not congruent with your core values and life’s mission. Identify your core values, life’s mission and set goals that will move you in that direction and your goal achievement will do you more good that harm all the time.

Your Mind: Key to your Success

The purpose of learning is growth, and our minds, unlike our bodies, can continue growing as we continue to live. MORTIMER ADLER

The mind is not just man’s seat of feelings or thoughts. As a success seeker your mind is the key to the achievement of a worthy goal and the experience of growth in any area of your life. Consequently, there is a need for mental enlargement and the acquisition of knowledge through study, research, seminars and mastermind groups.

Winston Churchill remarked, “…only the empires of the mind endure.” One of your most valuable assets today is your ability to use your mind to access, communicate, and creatively evaluate information. In our world in which the main item for consumption is becoming information, it’s what you know and how quickly you can learn that matters and not your status quo.

Success is the product of the appropriate use of the mind. Your mind is one single factor that determines the value of your life and socio-economic relevance to your generation. Your mind is the residence of your thoughts and your thoughts hold the key to an excellent and extraordinary life. It is imperative to understand that the ability to progress in any activity embarked upon is highly impacted if your mind is incapacitated in any shape or form.

The condition of your mind determines the condition of your life, thus your mind is a critical key to your success in any area of your life. One of the main reasons why success is an illusion to most people in their personal and professional life is because of the state or condition of their minds. Often the mind is cluttered to the point that it hinders any meaningful progress of any worthwhile endeavour embarked upon.

Bishop David Oyedepo in his book “Towards Mental Exploits” outline four major functions of the mind that will produce outstanding success. viz:

  • Learning - Knowledge is what you acquire in the process of learning.
  • Understanding - Your depth of understanding determines how outstanding you become in life.
  • Reasoning - Reasoning enhances the quality of decision you make.
  • Imagination - Your imagination sets the pace for your destination

To start with, you must emancipate your mind from the things that are causing it to be unproductive and your inability to take congruent action toward your anticipated expectation for which the following elements are invaluable:

  • Feed your mind with positive and uplifting materials.
  • Surround yourself with positive people
  • Stay away from the naysayer
  • Belong to a mastermind group
  • Change your focus from problems to solutions
  • Attend seminars and conferences
  • Enlist the help of a coach or mentor
  • Prayer - this is my favourite it works all the time.

E.W. Kenyon stated, “Make your brain work; it will sweat, but make it work. Then it will improve, it will develop, until you become the envy of those around you.” Go to work today the results will be immeasurable.
