Achievement motivation is a necessary skill that each generation must develop in order to become fully independent adults. Since World War II, each new generation has had it easier in North America, and yet they don’t always exercise motivation because they haven’t been taught to do so by their parents. With the world becoming a more dangerous place, parents tend to be over protective and also more involved in what their children are doing and not teaching them self-reliance.

This lack of motivation to achieve certain things has mainly been created by parents being enablers and causing negative reinforcement with poor parenting techniques. The end result is a high number of kids who seriously lack the motivation to succeed and to work hard at developing themselves. The message that these children have been given is that they are very special and shouldn’t have to do anything they don’t want to do, and that others are solely responsible for their well-being.

Children who aren’t taught achievement motivation will find it more difficult to develop motivation skills when they are older. Parents who do everything for their children and continue to do so as they get older aren’t using good parenting skills. This needs to be addressed and parents must begin to make changes. From teaching your child to make their own bed to being supportive as they do homework will aid in their ability to finish a task and improve their motivation. It will also increase their self-esteem.

Another way to boost a child’s motivation to achieve specific goals is by giving out rewards, yet it is equally important to only give out a reward when a particular task has been accomplished. That way you don’t increase motivation to get prizes, but rather to accomplish something and feel good about the effort put forth. It is imperative that you never give a reward when there was a promise that wasn’t met. This will only teach your child that your word is no good and that mediocrity is acceptable.

A role that parents have is to teach their children achievement motivation. Children come with their own personalities, yet parents must spend more time teaching and explaining than just doing things for their children. Motivation and emotion are related. With an increase in motivation from the child to do a task, receive reinforcement, and feel positive about themselves as they achieve greater skills, their attitudes and behaviors will change positively over time.
