Goal Setting Master Skill for Success

Goal-setting “master skill” for success. With this single skill you can almost outstrip any setback and have the advantage in your personal and professional endeavors. In the often-quoted study undertaken by Harvard University in 1979, graduates were asked how many of them had written goals with action plans for their achievement? Here was the finding from that study:

  • 3 percent had clearly defined written goals
  • 13 percent had written goals
  • 84 percent had no goals in any shape or form.

Ten years later a follow-up study was conducted on the same students from Harvard University and it was discovered that the three percent who wrote their personal goals were ten times more successful than the other 97 percent who either had written their goals haphazardly or had none.

From the above study, it shows that goal-setting is a master skill for success and its application can yield results short and long term. A lot of people will always tell you that goal setting is easy but why is it that they never have any goals written down? The assumption that the simplicity of an exercise invalidates its effectiveness is an oversight. However, taking action to process ideas and putting pen to paper is important for your success motivation. Therefore, it is imperative to reiterate that goal-setting is a function of success motivation.

I have been thinking and processing this thought that most people are drawn back at the idea of goal-setting just because of the phrase goal-setting. Now, let’s demystify that word goal setting. Henry David Thoreau queried, “Have you built castles in the air? Good, that is where they should be built. Now go to work and build foundations under them.” Most individuals are focused and engulfed with the thoughts of what I don’t want more often than what I do want. This has always been and still is a major setback to the process of goal-setting and goal achievement. Let’s break this process of goal setting down into less intimidating terms that will sensitize and inspire you to do what you ought to do on your success journey.

Begin the process of goal-setting by:

1.    Taking action: this is the action that initiates the process of goal setting as against just being dormant expecting things to change by themselves.

2.    Identifying what it is you want in each aspect of your life. Most people are unclear and confused about the answers to this question. By resolving this question you are very well on your way to the process of goal setting.

3.    Processing and marinating over these ideas. You have to allow yourself incubate these ideas until they are crystal clear.

4.    Writing them down. Here you have to put your clear and crystallized ideas on paper. This will also serve as a point of reference as you progress on your success journey.

5.    Thinking about how to achieve them.

6.    Making a list of what you will have to do to achieve what you want.

7.    Taking action: This is the process of execution that will move you toward your goal achievement.

Goal setting “master skill” for success is a definite skill that you can learn and master through consistent practice. You will make progress, see more of your dreams and life aspirations come to fruition through this process of goal setting. I cannot stress this point enough that goal setting is a function of success motivation. Take action today and you will be part of the three percent adults that actually put pen to paper and also be part of the three percent that become successful.

6 Steps to Review Goals for Peak Performance

Reviewing your goals for peak performance. This is one of the keys that set the extraordinary achievers from the average performers. There are two groups that this article targets. The first group – yes, you have set your goals and you are ready to execute your action plan. The second group – you have already initiated your action plan. Now, for both groups it is imperative that your goals be reviewed consistently through the process of goal achievement. For instance, those who have commence action on their goals and have seen tremendous or insignificant results and those who haven’t. In both scenarios there is always room for improvement. Human development experts tell us we can improve on every facet of our lives by at least ten per cent.

These are some of the most important reasons for reviewing your goals: to identify where you are in the process of your goal achievement, to keep you motivated, to ascertain what is operational and what is not, to recognize what to improve on and that which is obsolete and to identify the goal(s) that are no longer congruent with your core values and expectation. Dr. Rodney H Brady observed, “A goal oriented life is far more likely to lead to success than a life that leaves success to chance.” Thus, it’s important to review your goals to ensure that your goals stay relevant to your intent and remove the ones that are no longer appropriate. Here are six steps to review your goals.

1.    Review to make certain that your goal is personal: It is important that they are personal. Your most important goals must be yours and yours only. As they must be in alignment with your core values.

2.    Review and make sure your goals are stated in present tense: for instance, I make $4000 per month and not I will make…

3.    Review weekly or monthly your action plans vis-à-vis your results: Measure if your action plans are producing the desired expectations.

4.    Review to identify and eliminate obstacles so as to focus on important priorities and your goal setting success. Locate where you are wasting time, energy and resources so as to redirect and realign with definite purpose.

5.    Review your attitude in the process of your goal achievement. Negative mental attitude can hinder the accomplishment of your goals. Make sure you are positive not negative

6.    Review your goals and make sure they all qualify as SMART i.e. Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-oriented

Finale

Regular reviews of your goals  are critical to your success. Whatever your goals are the key to achieving them 95% of the times is to review them consistently and frequently. This discipline is invaluable. Start today and the benefits will astound you.

8 Motivational tips for Success

Motivation is often defined as the process of arousing, directing and maintaining behaviour toward a goal. You have declared your objective and set goals such as building a business, becoming a better public speaker, acquiring new skills or improving your health and so forth. One of the keys for success is to stay motivated. The difference between success and failure, misery and fun is usually motivation.  In one of my recent post on Five Ways to Motivate Yourself I indicated that staying motivated is significant to the achievement of whatever you set to achieve. The following motivational tips will help you to stay focused on your goals for success:

1.   Set priorities: Here is how to work effectively and stay motivated. Write down your task to be accomplished at the beginning of the day. Then, prioritize the activities in the order of importance. This will help you avoid clusters of unfinished work that can demotivate you and diminished your results.

2.   Use your goals: One of the advantages of goal setting is that it gives you short-term and long-term motivation and focus. Once you have planned your project and set your priorities, turn your attention to developing several goals that will enable you become successful.

3.   Surround yourself with positive people: You can leverage from the kind of people you associate and surround yourself with either positive or negative. Therefore, make a wise choice of associating and surrounding yourself with positive individuals at the same time stay away from the naysayers. This single factor will keep you motivated in no small measures.

4.    Clarify your intents: You are unlikely to succeed in any enterprise without clarifying your intents. One of the things that can keep you motivated is to clarify your intent, as unclear desires are hindrances to your motivation.

5.    Decide to follow through: From the onset you have to make a decision to follow through on your projects. For between you and the action to be taken is the decision to act and follow through on your action. Your decision will help keep you motivated in the face adverse circumstances.

6.   Create a clear plan of action: Someone said: “failing to plan is planning to fail.” It would be ridiculous to be halfway through building a house before taking into consideration the cost but only to discover the lack of resources. To save time, you must have an action plan to get your tasks done from start to finish.

7.   Acquire the needed skill or knowledge: Lack of knowledge or skill in any particular project can lead to lack of motivation. Consequently, before embarking on a project, evaluate what knowledge or skills you have, what skills you need to acquire and what others you need to improve.

8.    Create conducive atmosphere for development: Very often certain atmospheres are not conducive for development and growth. Thus hindering any meaningful progress. Lack of progress breeds lack of motivation 95% of the times. Hence, it is imperative to create an atmosphere conducive for development to stay motivated all the time and through the process of goal achievement.

Hey Champ, don’t lose your steam, stay focus and motivated and I’ll see you at the top.

Progress: Key to Success Motivation

Progress, progress, progress is the name of the game my friends.  For, progress, is key to success motivation. Everyone that I know wants to progress and move forward uninhibited in any way possible. It’s unbelievable the level of frustration, unhappiness and dissatisfaction that ensue from the lack of progress either personally or professionally today in our society. It is simply improbable to progress without any definite direction, sense of purpose and crystal clear goals.  The development of your potential(s) and the understanding of your unique intent will bring about progress, fulfillment and satisfaction beyond your wildest dream. On the other hand, please understand that there is no fulfillment and satisfaction in stagnation but unhappiness and frustration.

Most people set goals and are fired up to achieving them but too soon all that enthusiasm and motivation dissipate into the ether allowing their dreams and expectation go unfulfilled just for the lack of progress. Is it to lose that unwanted weight, to build a business or to read that book whatever your goal is, to have fulfillment and satisfaction you’ve got to have a way to measure your progress daily and celebrate every inch of it. It is important to measure the progress so as to keep your success motivation at an appreciable level. Undeniably, success is all about, making daily progress congruent with your core values and moving onward and upward toward your desired outcome.

You came into this world with incredible potential(s) surrounded by the possibilities of success, happiness and achievement. You were designed and wired up for forward motion as you harness your innate potential(s) and explore the unending possibilities that abound within and without. Rich DiGirolamo observed, “Belief in yourself, belief in your abilities, will override fear almost every time. The only thing we are afraid of is what we are capable of accomplishing.” Some of the beliefs that you hold have been developed over a period of time because of what you have experienced in the past or your orientation in life. It will be remarkable to discover that some of the beliefs you have embraced encompasses nothing with your present reality but because these are long held beliefs you hold on to them at the expense of your overall wellbeing. This is negating all your efforts to progress toward the attainment of your purpose.

Self-limiting belief is the one single obstacle to any meaningful progress – key to success motivation in any aspect of life. These are beliefs that will hinder your progress and your ability to move forward. Beliefs such as lack of intelligence, creativity, personality, the inability to speak publicly, inability to earn higher income or the inability to achieve your goals and the likes are all enemies of progress. Even if you are setting goals, making plans and taking action, self-limiting beliefs will sabotage your progress and undermine the greatness that lies within you.

Finale

You have to identify the origin of your self-limiting beliefs, change your associations, read and listen to empowering materials, stay away from anything that is toxic to your state of mind and find a mentor who can walk you through some of these detours. Follow these steps to achieve any goal you set for yourself, whether it’s weight loss, health gain, extended longevity, or something else altogether. Remember success is all about progress toward your desired expectation. Begin now and see that you are unstoppable.

7 Ways to begin your Personal Success Journey

Seven simple ways to begin your personal success journey. The journey for success begins with a step, just as the journey of a thousand miles. There is nothing like overnight success, it is an illusion to say the least. Success is not validated only by the results achieved but mostly by the process through which the results were attained. Therefore, if success is a journey and not a destination, it’s important to suggest that there are ways to begin your personal success journey. Most folks want to succeed but are unfamiliar with the ways that can lead to their personal success journey. For instance, in preparing for a journey there are ways you begin so as to move in the appropriate direction. Some of the ways that come to mind are to know exactly where you want to go, to get the itinerary for the journey, a map that will serve as a guide through the journey and so forth. Let us now examine seven simple ways to begin your personal success journey and your thoughts on how you began your personal success journey will be highly appreciated.

  • Define Success for Yourself: There are a lot of definitions out there today partly because of our individual orientations and upbringing. Most of these definitions may not resonate or mean anything to you. As a result, defining success and its meaning to you is critical as you embark on your success journey. With that said, you can use some of the great definitions of success from great minds  as yardstick for formulating your own definition of success. For instance, Dr. John C. Maxwell’s definition of success states, “Success is… knowing your purpose in life, growing to reach your maximum potential, and sowing seeds that benefit others.” It is easier to forge ahead on your personal success endeavours when you have clearly defined success for yourself.

  • Decide to Succeed: Now you may say that is simple. Do you know over the six billion people on planet earth only a fraction of them have one time made a deliberate decision to succeed. Isn’t that staggering? This is one of the qualities that successful people exhibits, once they have decided to succeed, they will do what it takes to succeed. Wishing you were successful is not the same as deciding to be successful. Wishful thinking does not move people to take action and do what needs to be done. It is when you decide to do, be and have, that you will now begin the process that will lead you on that success journey. Irrespective of were you are in your life the one thing that is stopping you from the success you deserved is DECISION with a capital D. You got to tell yourself I am decided on succeeding in my personal and professional life. It crucial not to second guess your resolve, you have to be crystal clear and hold yourself accountable for the decision you have made.
  • Declare what you want: Knowing exactly what you want is one of the single most important ways to begin your personal success journey. When you are nonchalant about what you want, the possibility of ever beginning your personal success journey and achieving meaningful results is going to remain a dream that never comes to fruition and fades into the ether. Declare what you want from the onset as you begin your personal success journey and you will be able to stay focus through the entire process without having to lose perspective in the face of temporary detours and challenges.
  • Believability: Your asset is the ability to succeed but your greatest asset is to believe in your ability to succeed. You must believe that you are endowed with innate capacity by God and that you are wired to succeed. Yes, failure is inevitable in the process of your personal success journey but you are not a failure, while you may have failed in some things but please understand that failure was just  an event that occurred in pursuit of your personal success. If you are to succeed you must believe that you can succeed and you will with style.
  • Create a plan: Creating a definite plan for carrying out your desire is invaluable on your personal success journey. For if you don’t plan, you plan to fail because you need plans to succeed in any endeavour. Hence creating plans that will get you from point A to B is of utmost importance as you progress through the journey.
  • Pursuit: Your desire to succeed is in your pursuit. It is not enough to have a personal definition of success or deciding to succeed without pursuit. Pursuit is the relevant force that transforms your decision into success. In science, it is purported that every object assumes a state of inertia or uniform motion until an external force is applied to change its courses. Nothing works on its own, it must be made to work. Likewise without pursuing your intent to succeed, your decision to succeed will only be a figment of your imagination.
  • Commitment: The last of the seven ways to begin your personal success journey but not the least is commitment. You must be exceptionally resolved that whatever happens you are going to stay committed to your personal success journey in spite of the insurmountable odds that may come your way. You will persevere and not abandon your post because of temporary detours. No matter what stay committed to your goals and objectives and I’ll see you at the top.

THE VICTOR by C.W. Longenecker

I came across this great motivational poem by C. W. Longenecker on positive mental attitude  earlier on today that was so inspiring and I thought I should share it with you my wonderful readers to accentuate your success motivation as you migrate toward your ultimate purpose. Here it is and enjoy.

The Victor

If you think you are beaten, you are.
If you think you dare not,  you don’t
If you like to win but think you can’t,
It’s almost a cinch you won’t.

If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost.
For out in the world we find
Success begins with a fellow’s will.
It’s all in the state of mind.

If you think you are outclassed, you are.
You’ve got to think high to rise.
You’ve got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win the prize.

Life’s battles don’t always go
To the stronger or faster man.
But sooner or later, the man who wins
Is the man who thinks he can.
